Diesel traffic bans: Apply for exemptions

Since January 1, 2019, a year-round traffic ban has been in force in the Stuttgart low emission zone - i.e. in the entire city area - for all vehicles with diesel engines of the Euro 4/IV emission standard and worse. Since July 1, 2020, a year-round traffic ban has also been in force in the so-called small environmental zone (area of the valley basin; districts of Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach, Zuffenhausen) for diesel vehicles of the Euro 5/V emission standard and worse. This has been decided by the state of Baden-Württemberg and included as a measure in the 3rd and 5th updates of the clean air plan for Stuttgart.

Note: All information about the diesel traffic ban can be found here:  stuttgart.de/diesel-verkehrsverbot (opens in a new tab)

The following are generally exempt from the ban

  • business delivery traffic
  • People with certain disabilities
  • medical emergencies

In justified cases, you can apply for an individual exemption.

Note: If you as a road user fall under these generally applicable exemptions, you do not require an exemption permit (further information on this under "Requirements").

Note: For out-of-town commuters, direct journeys to and from park-and-ride facilities outside the Stuttgart area are exempt from the traffic ban.

According to the state of Baden-Württemberg, you are allowed to drive to the following facilities:

Degerloch Albstraße, Heumaden, Obertürkheim Hafenbahnstraße, Österfeld (Unterer Grund), Plieningen, Rohr, Ruhbank (Fernsehturm), Salzäcker, Sommerrain, Vaihingen, Wagrainäcker, Weilimdorf Parkhaus, Weilimdorf Weissacher Str. Nord, Weilimdorf Weissacher Str. Süd, Zuffenhausen Am Bahnhof, Zuffenhausen Parkplatz.
