People with disabilities who are significantly restricted in their equal participation in society receive integration assistance benefits in accordance with the Ninth Book of the German Social Code (SGB IX). This is referred to as a substantial disability. People who are at risk of such a significant disability are also entitled to these benefits.
Integration assistance is intended to help people with disabilities
- be able to lead their lives individually and with dignity.
- plan and lead their lives as independently and autonomously as possible.
- participate fully, effectively and on an equal footing in society.
The services, known as specialist services, include
- Medical rehabilitation services
- Benefits for participation in working life
- Benefits for participation in education
- Benefits for social participation
The benefits are subordinate to benefits from other social benefit providers or rehabilitation providers such as health insurance, pension insurance providers, employment agencies and statutory accident insurance providers. Subordinate means that benefits from other providers or from providers of other social benefits must be exhausted first. Only then are integration assistance benefits granted.
Integration assistance services for children and young people with mental disabilities are provided by the youth welfare office within the framework of Book Eight of the German Social Code (SGB VIII).
