If you want to register your new vehicle, you can do so from the comfort of your own home via an online procedure. However, you must meet a few requirements for this. For example, you must have a new ID card with the eID online function activated.
Online service
Use the online procedure to register your vehicle online.
Prerequisites
- Natural persons require an identity card (nPA), an eID card or an electronic residence permit (eAT), each with an activated eID function including a six-digit PIN and a smartphone with the free "AusweisApp2" https://www.ausweisapp.bund.de/home or via a card reader. Alternatively, the BundID https://id.bund.de/de with ELSTER certificate or nPA/eID/eAT authentication can be used.
- Legal entities require the BUND corporate account with ELSTER certificate.
Procedure
- Call up the i-Kfz portal of the responsible registration authority
- Prove your identity using one of the above-mentioned identification methods
- Uncover the security code of the registration certificate part II
- Enter the required data in the application mask of the portal:
- License plate number and, if applicable, vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Security code of the registration certificate part II
- Date of a valid main inspection (HU) and, depending on the vehicle type, date of a valid safety inspection (SP)
- eVB number of the insurance company as proof of motor vehicle liability insurance
- Account details of the owner for the SEPA direct debit procedure (vehicle tax)
- For the license plate: Select the next available license plate number, specify desired license plate number or reserved license plate number - Application data is automatically validated
- Payment of the fee via an ePayment system, payment method may vary depending on the responsible registration authority
- Confirm entries and application
- Application is automatically checked in real time
- Approval notice and provisional registration certificate are immediately made available online and must be downloaded or sent to yourself by e-mail within 30 minutes. If the provisional certificate of approval is not retrieved within 30 minutes, immediate commissioning is not possible
- Print out the provisional registration certificate, attach it visibly to the vehicle and drive off immediately
- The registration authority will send you the registration certificate including the fee notice, registration certificate part I and part II, the stamp sticker holder and the sticker holder for the main inspection (HU) with stickers to affix to the license plate by post

As part of the procedure, an automatic check is carried out for vehicle tax arrears, fee arrears in accordance with the respective state law and the existence of a valid main inspection (HU) or safety inspection (SP).
If one of the steps is not completed successfully, citizens can contact the responsible registration authority.

Required documents
Brand new vehicle (without first registration):
- Registration certificate part II (vehicle title) with concealed security code,
- Valid electronic insurance confirmation number (eVB no. for short),
- IBAN (bank account) for the collection of the vehicle tax of the owner
Used vehicle (if you have a registration certificate part II with security code):
- Registration Certificate Part I and Part II with hidden security codes (The security codes for the Registration Certificate Part II were only introduced after 01.01.2018).
- Valid electronic insurance confirmation number (in short: eVB-No.),
- Valid main inspection (HU) and, if applicable, safety inspection (SP),
- IBAN (bank account) for the collection of the owner's vehicle tax.
