If you move to another registration district or relocate your business, you must re-register your vehicle as soon as possible (change of address in the vehicle documents). You have the option of taking your previous license plate with you. If you wish, you can also be assigned a Stuttgart license plate by the registration office when you re-register your vehicle, as before. This also applies to motorcycles and trailers.
Note: Stamping of the license plates is not required. However, if your previous license plates still have solid stickers, you will need new license plates with new stamp stickers.
Prerequisites
- You must not have any overdue fees and expenses from previous registration processes. If you have arrears of more than 30 euros, the registration authority may not register your vehicle until you have paid them. If the amount is less than 30 euros, the registration authority may decide whether or not to register the vehicle anyway.
- You must not have vehicle tax debts of five euros or more. When calculating the amount, late fees, interest and late fees are also taken into account.
- If someone is to represent you in the registration of your vehicle, you must give this person a written power of attorney. This must also contain a declaration of consent that the registration authority may inform the authorized person about overdue fees and expenses. Your representative must present the power of attorney and identify himself or herself.
- In the case of private individuals, the registration office of the main residence is responsible (please note that registration is not possible without prior registration of residence at the citizens' registration office).
Procedure
Private individuals can have the changes made at the vehicle registration office and at any citizens' office. Passport and registration matters are currently processed primarily in the citizens' offices. If you visit the citizens' office in connection with the registration or re-registration of your place of residence or to apply for an identity card or passport, you can have your vehicle documents changed there. However, this does not apply to vehicles that require special license plates, such as light motorcycles, as these are not available at the citizens' offices.
For companies, only the vehicle registration office is responsible.
Registrations with special license plates and seasonal license plates are only available at the vehicle registration office, regardless of whether the customer has already imprinted the plates or not.
Required documents
- Valid identity card or passport
- Registration certificate part I or old vehicle registration document
- Valid eVB number from your insurer
- Declaration on the collection of vehicle tax (SEPA direct debit mandate)
- previous license plates if youwish
- new stamp plates for internet-based deregistration;
- new license plates for technical reasons, for example because you had solid plates or they are no longer legible;
- wish to have a new license plate combination (Stuttgart combination, regardless of whether you want it or not).
If you are represented by a person, you also need:
- written power of attorney (original)
- Valid identity card or passport of the authorized person (a copy is sufficient)
If you are a minor, you will also need
- Declaration of consent and identification documents of the legal guardian
For legal entities/companies, you will also need
- Extract from the commercial register (a copy is sufficient)
- Business registration (copy is sufficient)
- Extract from the register of associations (copy is sufficient )
- Freelancer - letterhead or business card
- Registration certificate part I or old vehicle registration certificate. For old vehicle registration certificates, also the vehicle registration document.
If you want license plates for the new administrative district, you will also need
- Registration certificate part II or old vehicle registration document
- If you have a financed/leased vehicle, the financing or leasing bank must send us the registration certificate part II by post. The re-registration can only take place once this has been sent to us. Please note that you must provide us with the number of your registration certificate part II or the previous license plate number.
- Proof of a valid main inspection (HU) by means of the last HU report, if
- the vehicle is older than three years or
- the vehicle was previously registered as a rental vehicle, cab or similar, or
- if the next general inspection date is not shown on the registration certificate part I. - Confirmation of reservation if you have applied in advance to the new registration authority for a license plate of your choice.
Note: You always need proof of a valid HU if a new registration certificate Part I or stamping of license plates is required.

You must re-register your vehicle as soon as possible.
Processing time
A vehicle is always registered from the date on which you make a change of registration at the vehicle registration office or at a citizens' registration office. Registration with a date in the future is not possible.
Fees
Transfer of a still registered/deregistered motor vehicle with a previously foreign license plate (change of owner or relocation) or within Stuttgart (motor vehicle) (32-33)
Costs: 24,20 Euro to 80,30 Euro
Special regulation: In case of a registration at the vehicle registration office, the license plates have to be paid separately at the plate manufacturer. In the case of a registration at the citizens' registration office, there are already pre-embossed serial license plates, the pair of license plates costs 32.50 euros.

If you would like to keep the previous license plate on your registered vehicle, you can do so nationwide when you move. Inform the newly responsible registration authority when you change your registration. There, only the change of address will then be entered in the registration certificate Part I.
