Has your name changed due to a name change (marriage or divorce)? Then you must immediately apply for your identity card and, if you need it, a passport with your new name.
Identity documents with your old name are invalid.
Please note: You can also fulfill your identification obligation by having a valid passport issued in your real name. If this is not possible, you must apply for a new identity document.
Note: If you are getting married, you can apply for new identity documents at the earliest eight weeks before the marriage. Please bring the certificate from the registry office confirming the date of the marriage and the future name.
Prerequisites
- German within the meaning of Art. 116 (1) of the Basic Law (GG)
- registered with main residence in Stuttgart
For persons who only have a secondary residence or are not registered in Stuttgart, the Citizen office Mitte will decide, after consultation, whether you can apply for an ID card here.
Procedure
You must apply for your new ID card in person at a citizens' office as soon as possible after the name change.
Note: If you need an identity document until your new ID card is ready, you can apply for a temporary ID card. This is valid for a maximum of three months and must be returned when the new ID card is issued.
Required documents
- Previous identity card, passport or children's passport
- Digital photo for identity cards and passports
Additional documents after marriage:
- Certificate of name change from the registry office and marriage certificate or certified printout from the marriage register
- Certificate of name change or certified printout from the marriage register with current name or certified printout from the birth register with current name
