Self-determination law

On November 1, 2024, the Act on Self-Determination with regard to Gender Registration (SBGG) came into force. This law replaces the previous Transsexuals Act and the declaration regulations for intersex and non-binary persons in accordance with Section 45b of the Civil Status Act (PStG).

The SBGG gives you, as a  transgender, intersex or non-binary person (opens in a new tab), the opportunity to change the gender details and your first name(s) previously entered in the birth or marriage register by making a simple declaration to the registry office.
