Cemeteries

Often a place of mourning and farewell, but also places of reflection and tranquility. Due to the central location of many cemeteries and their park-like character, many take the opportunity to retreat here from the stress of everyday life.

The Prague Cemetery, opened in 1873, is the third largest cemetery in Stuttgart with an area of 21 hectares. A main avenue and a cross avenue characterize the cemetery. The focal point is the celebration hall built from 1905 to 1907 in Art Nouveau style with the municipal crematorium. In the eastern part of the cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery on the Prague was established from 1874.

In the Prague Cemetery there is also the field for the "Smallest of the Small" - a special burial place for miscarried children. The burial field was specially designed and allows for a dignified farewell. The Prague Cemetery also has a so-called columbarium with several hundred urn niches.

In the Prague Cemetery, which is a listed monument, you will also find the gravesites of numerous famous personalities, such as those of the poet Eduard Mörike, airship pioneer Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, opera singer Anna Sutter and Claire Waldoff, a star of the 1920s.

Cemetery Landscapes

Cemeteries are not only places of mourning. They are often used as recreational areas, especially due to their large stands of trees and green spaces. The cemeteries are looked after by the Garden, Cemetery and Forestry Department and, with their park-like character, are part of the quality of life in Stuttgart.
