Climate change

The global climate is changing as a result of the man-made greenhouse effect. And because global climate change does not stop at the gates of Stuttgart, everyone must adapt to the changes - from politics to business to citizens.

Clearly observable from the air: Forest dieback due to climate change.

The main cause of climate change can be tackled effectively. Emissions of climate-impacting greenhouse gases, which are mainly produced by the burning of fossil fuels and agriculture, must be reduced.

Metropolitan areas such as Stuttgart play a particularly important role in reducing greenhouse gases. There is considerable potential here that we must jointly develop and exploit. Whether it's the city administration, businesses, road users, homeowners or residents, everyone must do their part.

In addition to efforts to limit global warming, dealing with and overcoming the unavoidable consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly important. Accordingly, previous activities of the state capital Stuttgart and necessary further measures have been bundled in a climate change adaptation concept Stuttgart (KLIMAKS).

How climate change is changing the Stuttgart region

Climate change is progressing: Temperatures are also increasing more and more in the Stuttgart region. Currently, the annual mean temperature in Baden-Württemberg is about 1.1 °C above the mean value for the period 1961 to 1990, with a strong upward trend. This is associated with more summer days and hot days - but also changes in extreme weather conditions and precipitation events.

The effects of climate change affect practically all areas of life. Human health, agriculture and forestry, soil protection, water management, shipping and energy supply, nature conservation and biodiversity, and tourism are particularly affected.

What is Stuttgart doing against climate change

Climate change is also a challenge for urban climatology. In particular, the mitigation of climate change and adaptation to its probable consequences are at the center of consideration.

To support these efforts, the City of Stuttgart has already initiated a great deal and continues to work on existing or new concepts and projects - such as the Climate Protection Concept (KLIKS) or the Stuttgart Climate Change Adaptation Concept (KLIMAKS).

The KLIMAKS concept of the city of Stuttgart comprises more than 50 measures, builds on the German Adaptation Strategy of the Federal Government to Climate Change and concretizes it for the state capital Stuttgart.

One of the focal points is planning-conceptual measures that increase the overall possibility of adapting to climate change, set a course, and then entail defined implementation. In particular, the focus is on dealing with increasing thermal stress, but also on adapting to the increase in the frequency of strong wind events.
