Zuffenhausen

Zuffenhausen is one of the largest districts in the state capital. Zuffenhausen is internationally known as the headquarters of the Porsche company, which also bears the Stuttgart Rössle in its coat of arms.

Zuffenhausen is home to the only inner-city forest high ropes course in Stuttgart. Visitors can let off steam on eight courses with over 80 exciting climbing elements.
The Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen was opened in 2009. It is one of the most visited museums in Stuttgart.
The architect Hans Scharoun (1893 to 1972) left his mark in several places in Stuttgart. Buildings designed by him can be found in the Weissenhof estate, Fasanenhof and Zuffenhausen.
From 1955 to 1959, the Romeo and Juliet high-rise group was built according to the plans of architects Hans Scharoun and Wilhelm Frank. The high-rises are listed as an example of 1950s architecture.
In 1897, despite financing problems, construction of St. Paul's Church began. At its inauguration in 1903, even the royal couple of Württemberg was present.

History

Zuffenhausen has been located on important connecting roads since Roman times. The village was first mentioned in a papal document from 1204, in which "Offenhausen" was listed among the possessions of the Bebenhausen monastery. In all probability, the name can be derived from a personal name and means "settlement of Offo or Uffo".

Until the beginning of industrialization, fruit growing, field cultivation, viticulture and cattle breeding were the main pillars of the economy in Zuffenhausen. The railroad station was built in 1846 and this got the industrial engine running. On April 23, 1907, Zuffenhausen was granted town charter.

Due to the high financial burden after the First World War, the citizens voted in a referendum for Zuffenhausen to join the city of Stuttgart. The incorporation was completed on April 1, 1931.

Today

Zuffenhausen is an industrial location that is important for the entire city. Porsche AG stands out in particular. Of particular interest to visitors is the  Porsche Museum, which opened in 2009. The futuristic landmark at Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen took over three years to build. 80 vehicles are on display in the museum - as well as around 200 other small exhibits.

The "Romeo and Juliet" twin tower block in the Rot district, built by architect Hans Scharoun, is also famous throughout Germany. It is considered a pioneering example of post-war architecture.

Since April 2, 1977, the district of Zuffenhausen has been officially twinned with the French town of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. La Ferté-sous-Jouarre is located in the Seine-et-Marne district around 60 kilometers east of Paris. Regular visits and return visits take place. In addition, joint twinning sports festivals are organized and there is also a lively exchange between the Zuffenhausen schools and the schools in La Ferté.
