Child day care in Stuttgart

The overall responsibility for fulfilling the tasks in child day care lies with the public youth welfare organization.

The tasks of child day care in Stuttgart are carried out by the Child Day Care Department of the Youth Welfare Office of the City of Stuttgart. In addition, the  Caritasverband für Stuttgart e.V (opens in a new tab). has been commissioned with the tasks of qualification, advice, support and placement in child day care, in the implementation of which the Youth Welfare Office is actively involved.

The team at the Child Day Care Department of the Youth Welfare Office will advise and inform you on the following topics:

• Financial support for a childcare place in child day care
• Reimbursement of social security contributions
• Suitability and permission for child day care (according to §43 SGB VIII), in short “care permit”
• Voluntary benefits from the city (e.g. rent subsidy for large daycare centers)

Are childminders self-employed?

In Stuttgart, childminders are generally self-employed. All childminders who offer childcare in Stuttgart are affiliated with the  Caritas Association’s specialist childcare advice service (opens in a new tab) and receive professional support and advice from the outset.

Is there a childcare contract?

If a childcare relationship is established, a childcare contract under private law is concluded between the childminder and the parents. This contract sets out, for example, the agreed care times, details of payment, the duration of the contract and insurance.

How much does daycare cost?

Parents can apply to the youth welfare office to have the childcare costs covered. If the application is approved, parents usually contribute to the costs of childcare and pay a fee.

Is my child insured against accidents while in childcare?

Yes, children in day care are covered by statutory accident insurance via the Baden-Württemberg accident insurance fund if they are looked after by a suitable childminder (§§ 23, 43 SGB VIII).

How do I find a childminder?

The  Caritas Association’s specialist childcare advice service (opens in a new tab) is happy to advise and support interested parents in their search for a childminder. Information events are held regularly to provide information about the general conditions of child day care and to answer any questions.

Colloquially, childminders are often referred to as childminders. In consultation with the youth welfare office and the independent providers, the childminder decides for themselves how many children they would like to look after, in what time frame and in what form of childminding.

The design of the educational concept is the responsibility of the childminder. During their training, childminders are intensively prepared for the care and support of the children and also receive professional support during their work. Furthermore, childminders regularly take part in further training and exchange meetings.

This is how it works:

1. Participation in an information event at the Caritas Association
2. Initial assessment of suitability in the form of a preliminary interview and home visit
3. Participation in the qualification course (160 teaching units) and accompanying internship
4. Suitability assessment and verification for working as a childminder and granting of the care license by employees of the youth welfare office
5. Opening of your own daycare center
6. Participation in the qualification course accompanying the activity (140 teaching units)
7. Completion of the qualification

The qualification lasts a total of around 12 to 18 months. Prospective childminders can continue to work during the qualification, as the courses also take place in the evenings or at weekends.

As a rule, childminders are self-employed. This requires independent planning, particularly with regard to investments, taxes and bookkeeping. Health and pension insurance must also be taken out, and additional cover in the event of illness or unemployment should also be considered.

With training and advice from the Caritas Association, they receive comprehensive guidance and support right from the start.

They can receive public funding from the youth welfare office, which makes their income calculable - it is calculated per child and per hour. The public funding also includes a pro rata reimbursement of social insurance.
