Citizen's Income

You currently have no income or your earnings are not sufficient to cover your daily living needs, such as groceries, clothing and rent? Or will your entitlement to unemployment benefit I expire soon?

In this case, you can apply for the citizen's allowance at the Jobcenter Stuttgart.

Persons capable of gainful employment receive Bürgergeld for persons capable of gainful employment upon application if they:

  • have reached the age of 15 and not yet 65,
  • have their habitual residence in Germany and their place of residence in Stuttgart
  • and are proven to be in need of assistance.

The persons in the household who are not capable of working, on the other hand, receive citizen's income for persons who are not capable of working.

The citizen's allowance is made up of standard needs, additional needs if applicable, and rent and heating costs. Persons capable of gainful employment are also insured for health and nursing care when they receive the citizen's income. Children are usually covered by family insurance.

Application

To apply, you can use the relevant forms in the Downloads section (see below) or simply submit an informal application - by telephone or e-mail - to the  Jobcenter branch office (opens in a new tab) in your place of residence or the relevant specialist office. The forms will then be sent to you. As a rule, you will be given an appointment to submit the completed documents, during which the application will be discussed together and any questions you still have will be clarified.

When approving the application, all persons who belong to the immediate family circle and live together are taken into account - they form a community of need. This usually includes parents and children up to the age of 25 as well as unmarried partners. When calculating the entitlement to benefits, the income and assets of all persons in the community of need are taken into account.

The application is always deemed to have been submitted on the first day of the month, regardless of when in the month it was actually submitted. For example, if you register with the Jobcenter on July 15, you will receive benefits retroactively from July 1 if you are entitled to them.

Note: The applications and forms listed here are currently not all available as accessible PDF documents. The process of converting all applications and forms into digitally fillable versions is underway. People with disabilities, especially visually impaired people, will receive personal support from their contact person at the Jobcenter when completing the applications and forms.

Contact the  Jobcenter branch office (opens in a new tab) in your place of residence or the relevant specialist office and speak openly about your living situation. The local benefit providers will be happy to inform you about financial assistance to secure your livelihood.
