Drinking water

Drinking water is one of our most important sources of life. Therefore, it is continuously monitored by the health department. This is to ensure that the high requirements for drinking water quality are met.

Netze BW's elevated drinking water reservoir on Hasenbergsteige is one of eight priority reservoirs in Stuttgart. Among other things, it supplies the city center.

Stuttgart is supplied almost 100 percent with state water from the Donauried and Lake Constance water. The water comes into the city via long-distance pipelines from the water suppliers. The water suppliers and owners of water facilities are responsible for the purity and cleanliness of the water. The public health department monitors, among other things, that everyone fulfills their obligation and complies with the limit and guideline values for drinking water.

Self-supply from private wells must be reported and is only possible in exceptional cases. Please use the  Baden-Württemberg service portal (opens in a new tab) to report a self-supply or other water supply systems.

Drinking water analysis - why it is so important

Analysis results of drinking water as well as its origin and further information can be found via the  water portal of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (opens in a new tab). First, the address is entered and selected via the "Go to search" button, then a field with three icons opens on the right-hand side. The top icon leads to the download of the drinking water analysis. Average value analyses from the state water supply and the Lake Constance water supply can also be found on the "First-class drinking water for Stuttgart" page of  Netze BW Wasser GmbH (opens in a new tab).

If you have any questions or in unclear cases, you can contact Netze BW Wasser GmbH at any time for information about the type of drinking water and the associated mean value analyses in the Stuttgart distribution network or send an email to  wasser-anfragenetze-bwde The aim is to minimize the risk of pathogens and protect citizens from infection.

Area-wide and regular control

The water is tested at regular intervals. The public health department monitors whether the quality requirements are being met by the water suppliers. This monitoring applies to public facilities such as hospitals, day-care centers or homes and, in some cases, commercial properties. Furthermore, the water quality at public events, such as markets, is also monitored by the public health department.

In addition to the public health department, the  state health department (opens in a new tab), the district water suppliers and the central laboratory of Netze BW Wasser GmbH also carry out checks. The central laboratory carries out routine daily tests to ensure that the water quality is perfect. The public health department is informed immediately of any deviations.

Caution in the household with tap water

If the water stands in the domestic installation for a long time ("stagnates"), it can absorb substances from the pipe material in undesirable concentrations. This can affect the water supplied. The water supplier guarantees that the water quality is maintained until it is delivered to the house. From the water meter onwards, the owner of the water supply system or domestic installation is responsible for maintaining the water quality.

The concentration of microbiological or chemical parameters can increase within the drinking water installation of a building. Detailed information on microbiological parameters and heavy metal parameters and their exceedance in drinking water installations, as well as the reporting forms to fill in and send to the public health department, can be found under "Further information".

We recommend using fresh water - recognizable by its cooler temperature - for the production of food or infant formula from the water supply. We advise against using hot water from the tap to prepare food and drinks. You can find more information on  water quality in Stuttgart and the health risk of  legionella on the relevant topic pages.
