Water quality

The public health department monitors the quality of drinking water in Stuttgart. This includes drinking water from water suppliers, public drinking fountains or water in baths. Water suppliers and owners of water supply facilities are responsible for the purity and cleanliness of the water.

The fact that you can generally drink water from the tap without hesitation is due not least to strict controls and regulations.

Drinking water is one of the most common and best controlled foods. The standards are regulated by the Drinking Water Ordinance. The aim of this ordinance is to protect human health from adverse effects resulting from the contamination of water. The Drinking Water Ordinance requires that the specified limit values for  drinking water must be complied with. Drinking water must be flawless in terms of taste, smell and appearance.

Important water values at a glance

Water suppliers and owners of water systems are responsible for the purity and cleanliness of drinking water. The public health department monitors that everyone fulfills their obligation and complies with the limit and guideline values for drinking water.

Average value analyses from the state water supply and the Lake Constance water supply can be downloaded from the "First-class drinking water for Stuttgart" page of  Netze BW (opens in a new tab) in the lower section under "Important downloads". If you have any questions or in unclear cases, you can contact Netze BW Wasser GmbH at any time for information about the type of drinking water or send an e-mail to  info.wassernetze-bwde

Hygiene requirements for bathrooms

The public health department also keeps an eye on the  water in fountains. In Stuttgart, there are many publicly accessible drinking fountains that are operated from spring to fall. Drinking fountains are marked as such and are also checked regularly.

In order to prevent bathers from being exposed to a health risk in the swimming pool, the health department also monitors the water quality of the bathing establishments. As there are no nationwide swimming and bathing pool regulations, the pools are based on the DIN 19643 standard and the recommendation of the Federal Environment Agency on hygiene requirements for pools and their monitoring.
