Apply for a residence permit - for the purpose of study, language course, school attendance

You meet the general requirements for obtaining a  residence permit and can also prove that you meet the following requirements:

Study at a

• state or
• state-recognized higher education institution (university, university of education, art college, university of applied sciences) or
• comparable educational institution (e.g. Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University)

Studies as the main purpose of the stay. This includes all training phases:

• Language course or preparatory college to prepare for studies
• language examination
• Internships in preparation for studies (if recommended or required by the university)
• Studies (basic studies, main studies, internships during studies, intermediate and final examinations)
• Postgraduate, additional, supplementary studies or doctorate
  

Your living expenses (assessment limit is the maximum funding rate according to the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG)) and health insurance in Germany are guaranteed. You meet the requirements for admission to the desired educational institution.

Before entering Germany, you must applyfor a national visain your home country. The representation of the Federal Republic of Germany will involve the relevant immigration authority. In the visa procedure, you must provide information about your job in Germany.

To extend your residence permit, you will receive a letter in good time before it expires, informing you of the documents required. At the same time, you will receive an appointment for an interview. If you have not received this letter in good time before your residence permit expires, you should contact the Foreigners' Registration Office as soon as possible to  arrange an appointment (opens in a new tab) arrange an appointment (opens in a new tab).

To ensure a quick and smooth process, please bring the following documents with you:

• Passport
•  Digital photo
• Completed registration form
• Completed application for a residence permit
• Valid entry visa for study, language course, school attendance
• Proof of admission to studies or intensive German course or school attendance
• Proof that your livelihood is secured (e.g. savings book, scholarship, declaration of commitment)
• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of accommodation, rental agreement

NOTE: In addition to the points listed above, further requirements may need to be met. Your application can only be processed if all documents are submitted in full.

You must submit your application before your visa or residence permit expires.

Due to the large number of applications for a residence permit, longer processing times must be expected. We kindly ask you to refrain from making interim inquiries.
