Prerequisites
You meet the general requirements to obtain a residence permit and can also prove the following requirements:
- You have a job or a concrete job offer.
- Approval from the Federal Employment Agency, insofar as approval is required.
- Your livelihood and health insurance are secured.
Procedure
If you are applying for a residence permit for the first time:
Before entering Germany, you must generally apply for a national visa in your home country. In certain cases, the representation of the Federal Republic of Germany will involve the competent foreigners authority. In the visa procedure, you must provide information about your job in Germany.
After entering Germany, you must apply for a residence permit in writing to the Foreigners' Registration Office in the Skilled Workers and Migration Team before your visa expires. You can submit your application online (opens in a new tab) here or send it to us by post.
To extend your residence permit, you will receive a letter in good time before it expires, informing you of the documents required. At the same time, you will receive an appointment for an interview. If you have not received this letter in good time before your residence permit expires, you should contact the Foreigners' Registration Office as soon as possible to arrange an appointment (opens in a new tab). To ensure a quick and smooth process, you must bring the following documents with you:
- Passport
- Digital photograph
- Completed registration form (registration at a citizens' office)
- Completed application for a residence permit
- Valid entry visa for employment
- Proof that your livelihood is secured
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of employment or job offer
- Proof of accommodation, rental agreement
If you are applying for an extension of your residence permit:
- Passport
- Digital photo
- Completed application for extension of a residence permit
- Proof that your livelihood is secured (e.g. last 3 payslips)
- Certificate of employment and earnings
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of accommodation
NOTE: In addition to the points listed above, further requirements may need to be met. Final processing of your application will only be considered if all documents are submitted in full.
