Apply for a residence permit for research purposes

You meet the general requirements to obtain a  residence permit and can also prove the following prerequisites:

• You are a scientist and want to work at a German research institution.
• You have concluded a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with the research institution to carry out a research project.
• The institution must either be recognized by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) or conduct research.
• A cost assumption declaration from the research institution is available.
  
• This is not necessary if the research institution's activities are predominantly financed by public funds or if there is a special public interest in the research project.
• Your livelihood and health insurance in Germany are ensured.

Once you have entered Germany, you must apply for your residence permit in writing to the Foreigners' Registration Office in the Experts and Migration team before your visa expires.

To ensure a quick and smooth process, you must present the following documents:

• Passport
•  Digital photo
• Valid entry visa to work as a researcher
• Completed registration form (residence in Stuttgart)
• Completed application for a residence permit
• Proof that your livelihood is secured
• Proof of your scientific activity
• Proof that the research institution is recognized by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF)
• Proof of a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract for the implementation of a research project
• Proof of the research institution's declaration of assumption of costs
• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of accommodation, rental agreement

NOTE: In addition to the points listed above, further requirements may need to be met. We can only process your application if you submit all documents in full.

You must submit your application before your visa or residence permit expires.

Due to the large number of applications for a residence permit, longer processing times must be expected. We kindly ask you to refrain from making interim inquiries.
