If you have purchased a vehicle, you can take the previous license plate with you when you re-register the vehicle to Stuttgart from another registration district.
Note: The re-registration to private individuals can be done within Stuttgart at any citizens' office. This does not apply to vehicles that require special license plates, such as light motorcycles, as these are not in stock at the citizens' registration offices.
Note: The transfer to companies is only possible at the vehicle registration office.
Prerequisites
- The vehicle must not be deregistered.
- You must not have any overdue fees and expenses from previous registration processes. If you have more than 10 euros in arrears, the registration authority may not register your vehicle until you have paid them. If the amount is less than 10 euros, the registration authority may decide whether or not to register the vehicle anyway.
- You must not have a vehicle tax debt of five euros or more. When calculating the amount, late fees, interest and late fees are also taken into account.
- If someone is to represent you in the registration of your vehicle, you must give that person a written power of attorney. This power of attorney must also include your agreement that the registration authority may inform the authorized person of any overdue fees and expenses owed by you. Your representative must present the power of attorney and provide identification.
Procedure
- For private individuals, the transfer can be carried out within Stuttgart at any citizens' office. At the moment, appointments for passport and registration matters are given priority in the citizens' registration offices. If you have made an appointment for these matters at the citizens' registration office, you can re-register your vehicle there. However, this does not apply to vehicles that require special license plates, such as light motorcycles, as these are not in stock at the citizens' bureaus.
- For companies, only the vehicle registration office is responsible.

- Identity card or passport (for private individuals, the registration office of the main place of residence is responsible - please note that registration is not possible without prior registration of residence at the citizens' office)
- Previous registration certificate part I/vehicle registration certificate
- Registration certificate part II/vehicle registration document
- If you have a financed/leased vehicle, the financing or leasing bank must send us the registration certificate part II by post. The re-registration can only take place once this has been sent to us. Please note that you must provide us with the number of your registration certificate part II or the previous license plate number.
- Valid eVB number from your insurer
- Valid HU report/HU stamp in the registration certificate part I
- Previous license plates (if a license plate change is to take place)
- SEPA mandate for the collection of vehicle tax
- Authorized representatives require a power of attorney for the registration, their own ID and the ID of the person granting the power of attorney
For legal entities or self-employed traders:
- Business registration or extract from the commercial register if based in Stuttgart
- Business registration and extract from the commercial register if the head office is located outside Stuttgart
- for freelancers (e.g. doctors, architects, sometimes also lawyers) a letterhead or business card is required
When registering a light motorcycle, the following documents are required (only possible at the vehicle registration office)
- Identity card or passport (for private individuals, the registration office of the main place of residence is responsible - please note that registration is not possible without prior registration of residence at the citizens' office)

At the customer's request, a Stuttgart license plate can also be assigned by the registration office when the vehicle is re-registered. In this case, the previous license plates must also be presented for cancellation.
If a registered vehicle with license plates is sold, it must be assumed that the previous owner has no objections to the purchaser continuing to use the license plates.

A vehicle is always registered from the date on which you make a change of registration at the vehicle registration office or at a citizens' registration office. Registration with a date in the future is not possible.
