The Plieningen wastewater treatment plant has a capacity of 133,000 population equivalents and treats up to 17,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day from Stuttgart, Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Ostfildern-Kemnat, Stuttgart Airport and Messe Stuttgart.

With the help of three CHP modules, digester gas is converted into electrical energy and heat and is used to supply the sewage treatment plant itself. A photovoltaic system has also been in operation at the Plieningen sewage treatment plant since June 2022. This means that an overall level of electrical self-sufficiency of around 50 % can be achieved.
