The opera house and playhouse have been attracting theater-hungry visitors to the Schlossgarten for over 100 years. The venues were built between 1909 and 1912 by architect Max Littmann. The neoclassical double theater - with "Großes Haus" for opera and "Kleines Haus" for drama - caused an international sensation when it opened in 1912.
However, only part of the ensemble has been preserved in its original form. While the "Großes Haus" remained almost undamaged during the Second World War, the "Kleines Haus" was destroyed. Today's Schauspielhaus was built on the same site between 1959 and 1962, an octagonal new building with large glass fronts and a restrained interior design.
Performances are regularly awarded
Stuttgart's state theaters have an international reputation. The ballet in particular has enjoyed a high reputation worldwide since John Cranko's direction in the 1960s. The wide-ranging repertoire delights both lovers of classical ballet and devotees of contemporary dance. The John Cranko School (opens in a new tab) is part of the Staatstheater Stuttgart.
A visit to one or more performances at the Staatstheater Stuttgart is well worthwhile. All three houses regularly receive awards for their performances. By the way, couples can say " I do" in the opera house opera house. The Staatstheater is run by the state of Baden-Württemberg and is co-financed by the state capital Stuttgart.
