In July 2014, the municipal council of the state capital Stuttgart decided to launch a municipal funding program for the preservation of vineyards in steep slopes in order to maintain the appearance of Stuttgart’s typical cultural landscape.
The aim of the funding is to preserve the dry stone walls and the staircases used to access the vineyards in the steep slopes of the unique cultural landscape throughout the city, particularly in the Neckar Valley and its side valleys as well as in the Stuttgart basin. The dry stone walls are to be secured for nature, the environment and viticulture.
In addition to funding the restoration of dilapidated dry-stone walls, the program also supports construction measures to open up vineyards on steep slopes that are difficult to access, thereby enabling the continued cultivation or reuse of fallow and scrubby areas on steep slopes as vineyards.
The program has an annual budget of 850,000 euros. The grants to the applicants are financed from this amount. In addition, the funds are available for the restoration and maintenance of footpaths and field paths, as well as natural stone staircases in steep slopes.
The subsidies are voluntary allocations of funds by the city, to which there is no legal claim. Preference is given to measures whose implementation is particularly urgent.
