As the "Wilhelmspalais", the StadtPalais - Museum für Stuttgart was the setting for important phases of Stuttgart's history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Reopened in 2018, the museum today occupies an important position in the urban discourse on the past, present and future. In addition to the permanent exhibition on the history of the city, special exhibitions and unusual activities ensure enthusiastic visitors. Telling city history in a contemporary way - that's what StadtPalais Stuttgart stands for.

 Municipal cultural institutions

The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart impresses with its sensational architecture and impressive art. The striking glass cube on Schlossplatz was opened in 2005 and houses the city's art collection, which includes works by Willi Baumeister, Fritz Winter, Adolf Hölzel and Otto Dix. Several special exhibitions per year set exciting accents. Guided tours, events and special programs for children and young people complete the offer.

The Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg has been showing exhibitions in all parts of the state since 1992. In the state capital, the institution has been operating a museum on Stuttgart's "cultural mile" since the end of 2002, designed by architects Michael Wilford and Manuel Schupp. There are the permanent exhibition "Landesgeschichte(n). The German Southwest from 1790 to the Present" and temporary exhibitions. The house's many events include the "Stuttgart Symposium," which is held annually in the fall at Stuttgart City Hall, and the "Contemporary Witnesses in the House of History" series.

From hotel to place of remembrance: Already in the times of the Weimar Republic, Hotel Silber was the headquarters of the Political Police. When the National Socialists came to power in March 1933, the building became the headquarters of the Secret State Police (Gestapo) and thus the center for state and bureaucratically organized Nazi terror. From here, the surveillance of society, the persecution of political opponents and discriminated minorities, the suppression of forced laborers and the deportation of Jews were organized and controlled in Württemberg and Hohenzollern between 1933 and 1945.

However, the history of Hotel Silber also shows the unfolding of democratic and pluralistic principles after 1945 and the change in the way society and its institutions deal with the National Socialist legacy. The "Initiative Lern- und Gedenkort Hotel Silber e.V." had prevented the demolition of the building and achieved that the state government stipulated its preservation in 2011. Since 2018, Hotel Silber has been a place of remembrance and a living center of commemoration and educational work.

The Old Palace in the style of the German Renaissance houses the largest museum of cultural history in Baden-Württemberg. The exhibition of the Württemberg State Museum leads from the Stone Age via the Celts and Alemanni to classical antiquity. From there, it goes through the provincial Roman department to medieval sculpture and painting to the present day. The glass collection in the vaulted cellar is one of the most important in the world. And with the "Young Castle", the Württemberg State Museum maintains a popular children's museum.

Stuttgart's Linden Museum provides detailed information on cultures from all continents of the earth. In the departments on America, South Seas/Oceania, Africa, the Orient and South and East Asia, the Linden Museum shows ethnological treasures from past times and puts them into a contemporary historical context. Special shows and events complement the permanent exhibitions.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum brings automotive history to life. With over 800,000 visitors per year, Stuttgart's most-visited museum displays around 1,500 exhibits, including 160 vehicles, which illustrate the development of the automobile and the brand up to the present day. Special exhibitions complement the program. No less exciting for visitors is the spectacular building: it has neither closed rooms nor straight walls and its interior is modeled on the DNA spiral with its double helix that carries the human genome.

A must for fans of the speedy speedster! The Porsche Museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the main plant in Zuffenhausen and also impresses architecture fans: the exhibition area rests on three concrete pillars, giving the impression of floating. More than 80 vehicles are on display in the museum, in addition to around 200 small exhibits. And if you've always wanted to know how to keep classic cars in good shape, you can watch the professionals in the museum's glass workshop as they work on them.

The State Museum of Natural History comprises two sub-museums, both located in the scenic Rosenstein Park. The museum in Rosenstein Castle provides an overview of the diversity of the plant and animal world with rare and spectacular specimens and offers an interesting insight into the evolution of life. The Museum am Löwentor mainly presents the world-famous finds from the prehistoric times of southwestern Germany.

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is one of the most visited museums in Stuttgart and houses one of the most important art collections in Germany. Works of European art from the 14th to the 20th centuries and of the American avant-garde after 1945 are presented in the classicist three-winged complex designed by Gottlob Georg Barth and the postmodern extension by the British architect James Stirling. The Graphic Arts Collection is housed in a second extension, which is connected to the museum complex by two glass bridges.

The wine-growing museum in the historic Ortskelter Uhlbach is a must for every wine lover. Since 1979, the "Alte Kelter" has offered an overview of winegrowing culture from Roman times to the present day. The half-timbered and roof architecture of the museum creates an extraordinary atmosphere.

The exhibition covers twelve topics, from the history of viticulture and insights into the work of the "Wengerter" (winegrowers) to interesting facts, cultivation and vineyard cleaning, pest control and the harvest of the wine. After a tour through 2000 years of viticultural history and wine culture, Stuttgart wines can be tasted in the museum's own vinotheque.

Le Corbusier's two houses in Stuttgart's Weissenhofsiedlung, along with other buildings by the world-famous architect, have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2016. Le Corbusier's semi-detached house has been faithfully restored and is now open to visitors.

The half of the building at Rathenaustraße 3 is based on the original design at the time of the Werkbund exhibition in 1927: Le Corbusier's room layout, the color scheme, even parts of the furnishings could be restored. The panoramic view over Stuttgart from the roof terrace is fantastic. The actual museum is located in the left half of the house. Here exhibits are displayed that provide information about the origins of the Weissenhof housing estate, its objectives and its development.
