Municipal cultural institutions

The municipal cultural institutions in Stuttgart stand for the diversity and range of cultural offerings and are places of encounter and dialogue. As part of the cultural administration, they perform valuable municipal cultural work and promote social participation in art and culture.

Cultural places of encounter and participation

The Carl Zeiss Planetarium uses state-of-the-art technology not only to tell stories about the stars, but also to make them dance. Stuttgart’s countless stories are told at the StadtPalais - Museum für Stuttgart, where local history is brought to life for everyone.

The city archive in Bad Cannstatt is the city’s active memory. And the city library in the middle of the new Europaviertel district, together with the central children’s library, the music library, the Graphothek and its 18 district libraries, is one of the largest and most modern integrated education and learning centers in Germany.

The Stuttgart Music School trains and educates the next generation of musicians from an early age. The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra is the orchestra of the state capital and, under its General Music Director Dan Ettinger, is a central component and cultural ambassador of the music metropolis of Stuttgart. And the art museum presents the highlights of the city’s art collection alongside special exhibitions.

Together with their chief conductor Dan Ettinger, the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra inspires audiences at concerts in the city and the country and is also an international musical ambassador.

In several concert series, the orchestra of the state capital designs its programs for many different target groups - from children and young people to senior citizens - for lovers of classical and romantic music, of film music or of crossover concerts with jazz and pop music.

In order to offer their audiences something new again and again, the Philharmonic Orchestra places the repertoire in different, sometimes surprising contexts and, in addition to well-known soloists and works, also provides a stage for new talents and compositions.

To introduce children to music, house rallies are offered in addition to the regular concerts for children and families. Kindergarten children and elementary school students playfully tour the Gustav Siegle House and visit the musicians as they practice.

The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra is part of the “Excellent Orchestra Landscape Germany,” the title of a program of the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Since 2013, the Stuttgart Philharmonic has also acted as the festival orchestra for the Heidenheim Opera Festival.

The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra is a figurehead and cultural ambassador for Stuttgart as a city of music and makes a key contribution to the city’s musical culture. Whether on tour at home or abroad, as a festival orchestra at the Heidenheim Opera Festival or at concerts throughout Baden-Württemberg - the Stuttgart Philharmonic and its chief conductor and general music director Dan Ettinger set artistic standards.

The musical focus is on works from the European musical tradition. But innovative projects such as “Mitten im Orchester” and “Nachtschwärmer-Konzerte” also delight audiences. And if you would like to listen to the sounds of the Philharmoniker in the afternoon, you can do so in the Kultur am Nachmittag series of events sponsored by the state capital.

The Stuttgart Art Museum is located in the heart of the city. Its firm roots in the region and in society have made it an important landmark in the state capital.

As an associated company, the Kunstmuseum is the central art venue of the city of Stuttgart and houses the city’s art collection. The striking glass cube, probably the most eye-catching building around Schlossplatz, provides a view inside at night and becomes an impressive work of art itself. The collection of the Kunstmuseum consists of over 15,000 works.

Two to three special exhibitions are held at the Kunstmuseum each year. In addition, smaller exhibitions deepen aspects of the collection or set accents. The permanent collection ranges from the late 18th century to the present and includes important works by artists such as Willi Baumeister, Wilhelm Lehmbruck and Adolf Hölzel. A collection of paintings by the realist Otto Dix, unique in the world, is also on display at the art museum. Interesting insights into the life of the painter can be found in the Haus Dix museum (opens in a new tab). The former studio and residence on Lake Constance is an institution of the Stuttgart Art Museum.
