Main cycle route 2: First construction phase completed, second construction phase begins in August

The city of Stuttgart is currently planning and building the main cycle route 2 between Stuttgart-Ost and Hedelfingen. This will create a continuous cycle connection along Ulmer Strasse and Hedelfinger Strasse. To achieve this, the road space has to be reorganized over long stretches.

The project will be implemented in three construction phases. As part of the construction project, sidewalks will be widened, numerous new tree locations will be installed, new crossing options for pedestrians will be created, and the existing ones will be made barrier-free. Sections of the roadway will also be resurfaced and sidewalks constructed in seepage paving as part of the project. In addition, all traffic signals in the planning area will be upgraded. Starting in August, work will begin on the second construction phase, which extends from the Otto-Konz bridges to Hedelfinger Platz.

Double turnaround and new crossing for pedestrians

In the second construction phase, the road space will be redesigned and cycle lanes will be installed on both sides. The sidewalks will be widened and a total of eleven new tree locations will be created. A double U-turn will be installed on approximately half of the road section to compensate for the loss of traffic at the Heiligenwiesen junction. An additional crossing option for pedestrians across Hedelfinger Straße will be created in the area of the double U-turn. The Hedelfinger Straße light rail stop - Bürocampus Wangen - will be given a second stop access. The existing pedestrian traffic lights at the stop and in the Heiligenwiesen area will be removed and replaced by crosswalks. The work is expected to last until fall 2024.

New traffic circles ready

Construction work began in October 2021 with the first construction section between Wangen Marktplatz and the Otto-Konz bridges. A key part of the work on this section was the construction of two traffic circles. In addition to the associated urban upgrading, Kesselstraße will be strengthened as the main access road to the industrial area and Hedelfinger Straße will be relieved. Bicycle traffic between Wangen Marktplatz and Otto-Konz-Brücken is now routed in mixed traffic on the roadway. To this end, the speed limit has been reduced to 30 kilometers per hour and so-called “sharrows” have been marked on the road. These pictograms signal to motorists that they must pay attention to cyclists. The work on the first construction phase has been completed apart from the final remaining work, which is currently still being carried out.

Redesign of Ulmer Straße in the third construction phase

The third and final construction phase will see the redesign of Ulmer Straße between Wangenerstraße, Landhausstraße and Inselstraße. Once the work is completed at the end of 2025, a continuous and safe cycle route will be available over a length of around three kilometers. The numerous accompanying measures will also significantly upgrade and modernize the route in terms of urban development.

The municipal council approved the project in principle on May 23, 2019. The planning was then coordinated several times with the Wangen and Hedelfingen district councils and with the involvement of local residents. The total costs of the project amount to around twelve million euros. The creation of the cycling infrastructure was included in the funding program of the state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal government.
