20 years of the Jobcenter Stuttgart

The Jobcenter Stuttgart was founded 20 years ago as a joint venture (ARGE) with the Employment Agency. In 2012, responsibility was transferred directly to the state capital Stuttgart in accordance with the option model. The Jobcenter Stuttgart became a municipal office.

An important step towards bundling municipal areas of activity and opening up sustainable urban development opportunities - for the benefit of Stuttgart’s citizens who receive benefits. Today, more than 710 dedicated employees secure the livelihoods of around 42,000 people in Stuttgart and accompany job-seeking citizens on their way to a new professional future.

The past 20 years have been characterized by continuous change and many challenges. The Mayor for Social Affairs, Health and Integration, Dr. Alexandra Sußmann: “The Jobcenter has always been faced with the task of reacting flexibly to the needs of the job market and helping people to find new career prospects. This valuable work not only strengthens the individual, but also benefits the entire urban society by opening up opportunities and promoting social participation. The Jobcenter therefore plays a key role in ensuring cohesion and the future viability of our city.”

Since it was founded, the Jobcenter Stuttgart has launched a number of initiatives and specialist units to reduce unemployment and provide targeted support for people in Stuttgart. In 2010, for example, the specialist unit for
self-employed was founded in 2010 to specifically promote the particular concerns of this group of people. With the introduction of the education and participation package, the Jobcenter made an important contribution to meeting the special needs of pupils.
cover the special needs of schoolchildren. Supporting refugees has also been a focus for years: a wide range of needs-based measures have made it possible to sustainably promote their integration into the job market.

Since its inception, the job center has supported an annual average of around 11,500 unemployed people who are directly available to the job market and ready to take up employment. Up to 8,370 employment relationships subject to social insurance contributions have been created for them each year.

Supporting job-seeking citizens is not only a challenging task, but also a responsibility that makes an important contribution to a social Stuttgart. The dignity of the individual is always at the
the center of attention.

Jochen Wacker, Head of the Stuttgart Job Center: “We attach great importance to respectful communication and responsible action. We value each and every individual. Discrimination or disadvantage have no place here. I would like to thank all employees, customers, our local council and our network partners for their trust and the good, successful cooperation over the last 20 years. Despite challenging conditions, we will continue to work on constantly improving our services in the future in order to create even better prospects for jobseekers.”
