History
Kaltental originated as early as the 12th century as a small settlement near one of the castles that once guarded the valley. At Heslach, winegrowers settled in the 14th century. Viticulture and agriculture dominated the scene for many years until the end of the 19th century when the first large companies such as Benger and Stuttgarter Hofbräu settled here and factory villas and apartment buildings were built for the workers.
An important connection to Tübingen to this day is the Weinsteige. While in the early 14th century horses pulled their trailers up the Alte Weinsteige, the Neue Weinsteige has existed since the early 19th century.
Today
The population is correspondingly diverse. Trainees, students, young families, people from all over the world, but also long-established residents enjoy living here, as the latest citizen surveys show. Around 80 percent of those surveyed stated that they were very satisfied or satisfied with their residential area.
The south is popular with its residents: they all appreciate the functioning infrastructure, the wide range of gastronomic offerings from quaint pubs to Michelin-starred restaurants, the good leisure facilities and the cultural offerings of their district. There are still stores here where customers can get individual advice, a craftsman just around the corner and two weekly markets. The many festivals such as the Kaltental Anna Scheufele Festival, the Heslacher Hocketse, the Heusteigviertel Festival and the Africa Festival, as well as the Marienplatz Festival, invite you to get to know your neighbors better. Stuttgart city center is also within easy reach.
If you want to get up high, take the cogwheel train to Degerloch or the funicular to the Waldfriedhof cemetery. Karlshöhe and Weißenburgpark - both open to the public - are popular excursion destinations, as are the two hiking routes “Blaustrümpflerweg” and “Rote-Socken-Weg”. And for those who like it faster, there is the downhill route from Degerloch to Karl-Kloß-Straße, which opened in 2015.
Each borough has a variety of events on offer. Current dates for the southern district can be found in the municipal events calendar. Clubs and organizations have the opportunity to register their events via service.stuttgart.de.
