City of Science Stuttgart
Stuttgart is a city of science and the scientific center of Baden-Württemberg with a high density of scientific institutions. As one of the strongest research locations in Germany, 45 percent of Baden-Württemberg’s research and development capacity is concentrated in Stuttgart, according to the State Statistical Office.
The state capital is the only city in Baden-Württemberg with two universities, plus five public universities and a large number of private universities. With around 60,000 students (as of winter semester 2022/23), Stuttgart is the largest student city in Baden-Württemberg.
The state capital is also home to various internationally renowned research institutions and over 100 Steinbeis Institutes. In addition, numerous research-based companies contribute to Stuttgart’s scientific strength and form an essential basis for the city’s prosperity.
The lively scientific landscape in Stuttgart brings many learners and researchers to the city, networks institutions throughout Europe and creates the basis for developments in society as a whole with its results. Science also provides important foundations for technological progress.
Science and the economy fuel each other, which is why Stuttgart is so strong in the fields of mobility and automotive, mechanical engineering, laser technology, the development of new materials, aerospace, environmental and energy technology, software development and IT and communication technologies.

A strong team for the city of science
The state capital promotes the development of Stuttgart as a science location with its Science and Universities team, which is part of the S21/Rosenstein and Future Projects Coordination department.
We support the relevant players at the location in their concerns. Exchange, networking and the development of a new vision are the goals we pursue. The network for science communication “SciComm Stuttgart” serves as a networking platform.
The aim of the Stuttgart Science Festival (opens in a new tab), which we organize every two years together with many partners, is to interest urban society in scientific topics and to get young and old excited about science. We also open the doors to knowledge with the “Knowledge meets the city” series: we arouse curiosity with special formats and people and bring science to life for new target groups. Perhaps these include the specialists of tomorrow?
In the long term, we are working with our partners to implement a showcase for science in Stuttgart. A “Science Space Stuttgart” will make science visible in the city.
Together with the scientific institutions, we are making the science city of Stuttgart shine.
