State capital Stuttgart

Child-friendly Stuttgart

Child friendly municipality

Children should be able to live and grow up well in Stuttgart. This includes security and protection, fair opportunities for all, but also that children are heard, involved and their rights respected. The state capital's participation in the "Child-Friendly Communities" program is a trend-setting step.

The state capital will once again receive the "Child-friendly municipality" seal of approval for its action plan in April 2024. Children and young people are also involved in the measures.

Implementation of children's rights: Stuttgart joins in!

The  Child Friendly Cities (opens in a new tab) programme is based on the experience of UNICEF's international  Child Friendly Cities Initiative (opens in a new tab), which has been working to implement children's rights at municipal level since 1996. Many municipalities in Germany have already joined the program, including Stuttgart in 2018. The program is funded by the  Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (opens in a new tab).

In the first year of the program, an action plan was prepared through an inventory and a participation process with children and young people. The " Child and Youth-Friendly Municipality 2024 to 2026 (opens in a new tab)" action plan is already the second action plan that the state capital of Stuttgart has submitted as part of the program. Prior to the Stuttgart  Action Plan Child-Friendly Municipality 2020 to 2022, goals and measures in nine child-relevant fields of action were already adopted for the  concept Child-Friendly Stuttgart 2015 to 2020, which have since been implemented by the state capital. The other action plans are based on these measures and fields of action and expand the spectrum.

A decisive criterion is confirmation by the municipal council. The 2024-26 action plan was adopted by the municipal council on March 21, 2024.

Child-friendly communities: Stuttgart is one of them!

After the action plan was reviewed by the  Child-Friendly Communities (opens in a new tab) Association and the experts, the state capital was awarded the "Child-Friendly Community" seal for the first time on March 4, 2020. The seal was renewed on April 26, 2024 following the submission of the second action plan. The sponsors of the association are the  German Children's Fund (opens in a new tab) and  UNICEF Germany (opens in a new tab). Since then, the implementation of the action plan has been accompanied by the experts. The seal can be revoked following the second action plan. Progress and developments are regularly reviewed during the implementation phase. Detailed information on the  Child-Friendly Municipality Action Plan and the  Child-Friendly Stuttgart concept can be found in the topic overview.
