Building communities

Citizens build together: Building communities give private individuals the opportunity to become active as developers in the middle of the city with a joint project. The city also benefits from this, because building groups often develop socially balanced, affordable and intergenerational housing ideas.

A successful example: the Olga-Areal. Seven joint building ventures, the Stuttgart housing association and two developers were involved in the realization of the neighborhood, which opened in the west in 2019.

Service provider wanted for external consulting and coordination office for community living

The state capital is expanding its support for communal and self-organized living. To this end, an external advisory and coordination office for communal living is being set up as a supplementary service - in collaboration with the city's contact point for building cooperatives. It is due to start work in fall 2024 and will be put out to public tender.

Interested service providers can apply on the state capital's tendering platform from 27.06.2024.

How does a building community work?

A building community is an association of households and individuals who jointly acquire a plot of land in order to plan and build their residential project on it and also to live there themselves. The project can be a new building or an existing property. In any case, the primary objective is the creation of residential property. However, rental models are also possible, either with a cooperative approach or in cooperation with one or more investing partner(s).

In addition to the opportunity to save costs compared to the "normal" housing market, building groups offer the possibility to actively shape the future - communally but still individually. Building communities require their members to participate in the project. Commitment, participation and a willingness to compromise are therefore required. The joint use of objects and spaces helps to save resources and creates scope for new offerings such as community rooms, workshops and music rooms, sports and play rooms, roof terraces and urban gardens, and much more.

Online contact exchange

In order to form a strong construction group that can successfully follow the common path, it is important to find suitable comrades-in-arms. In addition to friends and acquaintances, other interested parties can also join in.

The online contact exchange of the state capital helps to bring like-minded people together. Individuals and households can look for a connection to an existing group or make contact with fellow campaigners in order to found a group themselves. Existing groups, in turn, can look for further comrades-in-arms for their group or project.
