School offer and school choice
Choosing the right school can sometimes be a challenge for parents. Many factors play a role in the decision, such as spatial proximity and the educational and professional focus of the school. But social conditions and the child’s personal preferences are also relevant. The school administration office has compiled the most important information on the range of schools in Stuttgart for the orientation of parents and guardians. A directory of all schools in Stuttgart is provided by the school finder with filter search function.
School route and school vacations
To make the journey to school even safer, the Office for Public Order offers school route maps for the catchment areas of all elementary school. Information on this and other measures for a safe journey to school can be found at Walking to school. In 2019, for example, around 7,700 children from 35 Stuttgart elementary school took part in the “Safe on foot to school” campaign. The Good Fairy campaign (opens in a new tab) also ensures greater safety on the way to school. And here’s a tip for the school vacations: If you are looking for hands-on programs, you will find inspiration and offers on the vacation program portal (opens in a new tab)of the Stuttgart Youth Welfare Office and the Stuttgart Youth House Society (opens in a new tab). School construction
In addition to a school renovation program that has already been implemented, the state capital’s urban development measures also include new buildings. The largest project in the school sector is the Feuerbach Campus, which is costing around 198 million euros. The project includes three new school buildings on the site of the former “Neues Gymnasium” to be demolished and, together with the listed former “Leibniz-Gymnasium” to be renovated and a new 3-field sports hall, will form the future premises for the 6-form “Neues Gymnasium Leibniz”. The overall completion of this project is planned for mid-2029.
The largest single construction project at around 93 million euros is the new NeckarPark education center with all-day elementary school, 2-field sports hall, daycare center and the new Bad Cannstatt center for the Stuttgart Adult Education Center. Completion is planned for 2025.
Over 10 years ago, the municipal council launched a comprehensive school renovation program, from which 40 million euros are made available each year to reduce the renovation backlog at Stuttgart’s schools. In addition, there is an annual basic construction budget of around 18 million euros, which is used to implement and finance ongoing inspections, maintenance and repairs during the year.
School digitization
Together with Stuttgart’s schools, the IT Competence Center Schools of the Stuttgart School Administration Office is implementing the digitalization of Stuttgart’s schools.
From the launch of “Schule Online” in 1998 to the current digitization projects of the state capital Stuttgart and the federal and state funding programs, a wide variety of digitization measures have been and are being implemented in schools.
The educational requirements of Stuttgart’s schools are at the heart of the IT Competence Center Schools’ digitalization concepts. The school-specific pedagogical priorities are translated into digital requirements by the Media Development Planning team and implemented in the technical standards and concepts by the other specialist departments. The Stuttgart City Media Centre, together with the IT Competence Centre for Schools, complements the Stuttgart school digitization portfolio with regional digital training measures and other innovation and extracurricular offers for Stuttgart schools.
As a basis for the digitalization of schools, the Stuttgart School Intranet (SWIS) has been implemented since 1996 to connect all schools to the city network. By the beginning of 2024, all Stuttgart schools will be connected to the fiber optic network. This central, high-performance, redundant internet connection supports the digital operation of Stuttgart’s schools.
Digital building cabling in the schools is essential in order to implement all digital multimedia room standards and concepts. All classrooms must therefore be equipped with IT and media connections. Wi-Fi, charging and storage options, presentation media and fixed and mobile workstations for teachers and pupils can only be used effectively in everyday teaching with a comprehensive IT and media infrastructure.
The IT Competence Center also assists Stuttgart schools with IT support requests and problems. Since 2003, the Stuttgart Schools Service Desk has provided Stuttgart schools with a central point of contact. The qualified staff at the Service Desk are available to provide initial support via telephone, e-mail or the ticket system - including creating tickets and forwarding them to the right contact person or service provider.
All of the digital equipment mentioned above is designed and continuously developed on the basis of a standardized and sustainable digital module catalog that contains all of the hardware and software used in Stuttgart’s schools. The hardware and software products are evaluated, rewritten and made available to the schools based on the findings from everyday teaching.
