Air

The air quality in Stuttgart has improved steadily in recent years. Many factors influence the air quality in the city, from the basin location to the weather conditions and the high volume of traffic.

View from the Birkenkopf vantage point: Because of its basin location and built-up area, Stuttgart's city center has a special urban climate that also affects air currents.

The air in Stuttgart has long been an important issue. The air in Stuttgart is monitored around the clock. And has been for many years: The state of Baden-Württemberg has been operating a measurement network since 1980, and the Office for Environmental Protection has been taking measurements at various stations in the city center since 1965. The city of Stuttgart regularly publishes the  data on air quality (opens in a new tab).

One thing can be said for sure: Air pollution from non-traffic pollutants has decreased very significantly in recent years. Only in the case of traffic has the level of pollution remained virtually unchanged. But that, too, is set to change in the future - thanks to intensive efforts and numerous measures by the city of Stuttgart and the state of Baden-Württemberg.
