With a population equivalent of 1.2 million, the main wastewater treatment plant in Stuttgart-Mühlhausen is the largest in Baden-Württemberg. Every day, up to 160,000 cubic meters of wastewater from Stuttgart and the neighboring municipalities of Esslingen, Fellbach, Korntal-Münchingen, Kornwestheim and Remseck are fed to the Neckar River, 98 % of which is treated.

In addition to wastewater treatment, the sewage sludge produced during wastewater treatment is also thermally utilized in the main wastewater treatment plant in Stuttgart-Mühlhausen. The electricity and heat generated by digester gas and the waste heat from sewage sludge incineration are fed into the sewage plant’s own network. This covers around one-third of the sewage treatment plant’s total heat requirements and its electricity needs.
