Motor vehicle license plates - E license plates (electric vehicles)

According to the Electric Mobility Act (EmoG), you can obtain an E license plate for the following vehicles:

• a pure battery electric vehicle
• a fuel cell vehicle
• a plug-in hybrid vehicle (externally chargeable)

For the plug-in hybrid vehicle, there are two alternatives:

• Pollutant emission not exceeding 50g/km or
• 40 km range of the electric drive unit

The following vehicle classes receive an E license plate:

• Class M1 (passenger car)
• Class N1 (trucks up to 3.5t permissible total mass)
• Class L3e and class L4e (motorcycles with a maximum speed > 45 km/h)
• Class L5e (three-wheeled vehicles with a maximum speed > than 45 km/h)
• Class L7e (four-wheeled vehicles with a total mass up to 400 or 550 kg)

You must apply for the E license plate in person at the vehicle registration office. It is not possible to apply at the citizens' registration offices.

To apply for an e-license plate for your already registered vehicle, please submit the following documents to the registration office:

• ID card or passport
• Confirmation of insurance (evB code) from your vehicle insurance company
• SEPA mandate to collect the vehicle tax by direct debit (only if it is a hybrid vehicle)
• Registration certificate Part I
• Registration certificate Part II
• Valid report on the main inspection (HU
)
• Previous license plates
• EC certificate of conformity (CoC paper)
The following fields must be completed in the COC or certificate of conformity:
- Item 22 for vehicle category L or item 23 for vehicle categories M1, N1 and N2 (Pure electric drive - yes/no)
- Item 23.1 (Hybrid (electric) vehicle: yes/no)
- Item 26 (Fuel)
- Item 49.1 (Co2 emissions combined)
- Item 49. 2 (Electric range)
If this information is incomplete, this can be confirmed by submitting a manufacturer's certificate or an expert opinion in accordance with §21 StVZO.
• If you have a financed / leased vehicle, the financing or leasing bank must send us the registration certificate part II by post. The change can only be made once this has been sent to us. Please note that you must provide us with the number of your registration certificate part II or the previous license plate number.
• Previous license plate(s)

For new registrations and transfers, you will also need the documents required for these processes.
