Infection control

The public health department in Stuttgart plays an important role in protecting against infections. Its main task is to prevent communicable diseases in humans, detect infections at an early stage and prevent their spread. This involves protecting both the individual and the general public.

Thorough hand washing is one of the simplest yet most effective measures to protect against infection.

Protection against infections: From surveillance to hygiene

Depending on the type of illness reported, different measures are initiated to prevent or contain the spread of infectious diseases. The legal basis for this is the  Infection Protection Act (IfSG) (opens in a new tab).

The bundle of measures includes:

  • Continuous recording of notifiable diseases,
  • advising citizens and all actors in the health care system on the topics of hygiene, prevention and vaccination
  • infectious hygiene surveillance of facilities
  • Consultations and opinions on construction projects in medical facilities in accordance with the Ordinance of the Ministry of Social Affairs on Hygiene and Infection Prevention in Medical Facilities (MedHygVO)
  • Participation in disaster and emergency planning

The Federal Center for Health Education also offers useful information on  protection against infectious diseases (opens in a new tab).
