Kepler anniversary at the planetarium
2022 marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of the famous astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler. To mark the occasion, the Kepler Society and the University of Stuttgart are holding an interactive exhibition entitled “Heavenwards” at the Haus der Wirtschaft from January 14 to February 26, 2022. Lord Mayor Frank Nopper takes office
From January 4, Lord Mayor Frank Nopper is expected to be able to carry out his official duties in full and wear the Lord Mayor’s chain of office as the legally elected Lord Mayor. The first ordinary municipal council meeting under the new mayor with voting rights will take place on January 20. This assumes that no further appeals are lodged by the plaintiff in the ongoing court proceedings regarding the election of the Lord Mayor.

Haus für Film und Medien: The jury for the structural realization competition convenes
The House for Film and Media, which is being built on the site of the Breuninger parking garage in Stuttgart-Mitte, is intended to strengthen Stuttgart as a media location as a new open cultural venue. At over 40 million euros, the building is one of the city’s largest construction projects. A planning partner is being sought for the building. The jury for the architectural realization competition will meet in February 2022.

Opening of the Rosenstein Tunnel
After eight years of construction, the Rosenstein Tunnel in Stuttgart is set to open in spring 2022. The construction of the B10 Rosenstein Tunnel is the centerpiece of the Rosenstein Tunnel road construction project, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024. It is the largest road construction project that the city has ever carried out in one piece. An important part of the project is the removal of existing traffic areas, which will be replaced by green spaces and facilitate access to the banks of the Neckar. Launch of the “Stuttgarter Rössle” electric cargo bike rental fleet
In cooperation with the social enterprise Neue Arbeit gGmbH, the city is planning an e-cargo bike rental system from spring. The so-called “Stuttgarter Rössle” will be distributed by the social enterprise to at least ten rental points in the city. The Stuttgart Alliance for Integration is a role model for many cities - from language promotion, education and intercultural opening of the administration to refugee integration work and the establishment of a Welcome Center. Census 2022
How many people live in Germany’s cities and municipalities? Is there enough living space for all citizens? Where does the state need to invest more in the future? To answer these and other questions, another census will be held in Germany in 2022. The Statistical Office of the City of Stuttgart will begin preparations, such as the recruitment and training of survey officers, in spring - the survey will be carried out from May.

Completion of NeckarPark sports pool
The new NeckarPark sports pool is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2022. The new building will replace the air dome in the Inselbad Untertürkheim and the indoor pool in Cannstatt. This will ensure year-round operation for schools, (professional) swimming and the public. At 44 million, the construction is one of the largest investments in sports infrastructure.

The state capital establishes a new office in the new year. With five departments and around 400 employees, the Office for Digitalization, Organization and IT will be responsible for digitalization, networking, servers and data security. The new head is expected to take up office in April 2022.

New city sports event “Gymnastics meets beach volleyball” on Schlossplatz
The City Sports Event 2022 will transform Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz into an urban exercise space for five days in June. Handover/commissioning of fire and rescue station 5
The new Fire and Rescue Station 5 on Sigmaringer Straße in Stuttgart-Möhringen will go into operation in summer 2022. The new building with 9,000 square meters of floor space will house the fire and rescue station, the disaster control center for catering and supplying the volunteer fire department and an emergency operations centre (SIMOS redundancy).

Completion of the market square
The redesign and renovation of Stuttgart’s market square is expected to be completed in September. Launch of the BW youth ticket
From September, the state of Baden-Württemberg is planning a BW youth ticket that will allow children, teenagers and young adults to travel on public transport throughout Baden-Württemberg around the clock for 365 euros a year. The youth ticket will entitle all school pupils, trainees, students and volunteers to travel on all forms of public transport.

The Adolf Hölzel House in Stuttgart-Degerloch is scheduled to open in September. The home and studio of the famous Stuttgart artist Adolf Hölzel has been extensively renovated and extended. In future, it will serve as an exhibition venue, art school, research facility and studio for young artists.

Completion of main cycle route 2
The main cycle route 2 from Stuttgart-Ost via Wangen to Hedelfingen is to be completed in three construction phases by the end of 2023. The first construction phase is due to be completed in December 2022.
Further highlights
- The city of Stuttgart is celebrating two major twinning anniversaries in 2022: 60 years of twinning with Strasbourg and 30 years of twinning with Samara. Various events and activities are planned for this.
- Planning for the redesign of Theodor-Heuss-Straße will begin in 2022. Among other things, the outdoor areas there are to be redesigned and a new cycle path built. 13.2 million euros have been earmarked for this in the double budget.
- The city will be one of four municipalities in Baden-Württemberg to draw up a model climate mobility plan by the end of 2022. Together with initiatives, associations and large-scale citizen participation, measures are to be developed that will lead to a permanent and significant reduction in greenhouse gases in the transport sector.
- Stuttgart’s cult figures ”Äffle und Pferdle” will soon be helping people to cross the road safely in Schillerstraße. The inauguration of the traffic lights, including a street festival, should finally take place in 2022. The Äffle und Pferdle fan club is responsible for the idea and implementation.
Changes to fees and charges
In the area of waste management, residual waste fees will increase by an average of 5.57%, depending on the size of the container. For large collection points, there will be an average increase of 2.97 percent depending on the container size. For container changes of 60 to 240 liter containers, the costs will increase by three euros and for 1.1 cubic meter containers by four euros. The fees for additional emptying of waste containers will remain the same or increase by up to four euros depending on the container size and type of waste. The fees for the various waste fractions will increase or remain unchanged. The fees for organic waste, for direct deliveries to the Münster plant, for express bulky waste, for excess quantities of bulky waste and for deliveries without a card, as well as for “combustible renovation waste” at recycling centers and for setting up waste garbage cans at festivals and events remain unchanged.
The fees for cleaning sidewalks in cleaning zone 1 - city area - will be reduced: from 43.80 euros to 37.40 euros per linear meter for seven weekly cleanings (fee 1) and from 18.70 euros to 16 euros per linear meter for three weekly cleanings (fee 2). In cleaning zone II - Arnulf-Klett- and Rotebühlpassage - the fee remains unchanged at 178.50 euros per linear meter.
In the area of urban drainage, the cost of the wastewater charge will be reduced from 1.69 to 1.66 euros per cubic meter of fresh water used. The rainwater charge will also fall from 0.73 to 0.70 euros per calculation area.
With the implementation of the 6th stage of parking space management, area-wide management with the corresponding parking fees will also be introduced in the new connection areas in the districts of Degerloch and Zuffenhausen as well as in the expansion areas in the districts of Mitte and Ost. The districts of Möhringen and Vaihingen are planned as optional areas if the requirements are met.
