Bicycle city Stuttgart

The city administration has set itself the goal of making Stuttgart a cycling city. The cycle path network in the state capital is being continuously expanded to make cycling even more attractive. In the long term, cycling should account for 25 percent of all traffic. (Status 2025)

In order to promote cycling, the network of cycle lanes is being expanded - one example of this is Eberhardstraße in Stuttgart-Mitte.
One important topic is the transportation of bicycles on public transport: the "Die Zacke" rack railroad's show car also transports cargo bikes - uphill from Marienplatz in the south of Stuttgart to Stuttgart-Degerloch.
Cyclists can store their bikes in the bicycle garage in Hasenbergstraße in Stuttgart-West - safely and easily accessible.
Holzgartenstraße in Stuttgart-Mitte is a good example of how a pop-up bike lane can be turned into a permanent riding area for cyclists.

The proportion of cyclists in Stuttgart has risen steadily over the past few years. This can be seen from the data collected at the cycle counting points. In the last modal split survey (MID 2023), the proportion of journeys made by bicycle among Stuttgart's resident population was around 9 percent. By comparison, motorized private transport accounts for 36 percent, followed by pedestrians with 32 percent and public transport with 23 percent.

Expansion of the infrastructure

Over 500 projects to promote cycling have been initiated since the municipal council's 2019 target resolution. From the smallest measures to major projects worth millions. 300 of these have been completed in recent years. You can find an overview of the most important projects on our project map.

Cycle network - new routes and better connections

There are almost 360 kilometers of cycling facilities in Stuttgart. In addition, there are 265 one-way streets open to bicycle traffic in the opposite direction and 128 so-called bicycle locks. Approximately 70 percent of the road network in Stuttgart is traffic-calmed with a speed limit of 30 km/h and has a speed that is compatible for mixed traffic with motor vehicles. In order to make cycling even more attractive, new connections for cycling are being created, while existing connections are also being expanded and improved.

News around the bike

Stuttgart consistently focuses on sustainable mobility and makes the bicycle an alternative in urban traffic. To this end, the cycle path network is being continuously expanded and improved. In 2025, further projects are underway to make cycling even more attractive for citizens:

In June 2025, the state capital of Stuttgart was awarded the silver certificate as a  children's bikes for rent since March 2025.

In June 2025, the state capital of Stuttgart was awarded the silver certificate as a  "bicycle-friendly employer" by the German Cyclists' Federation (ADFC) for its commitment to cyclists.

The new cycle lane at Bad Cannstatt station was opened in June 2025.

Bike concept

The planning is based on the cycling concept from 2009, which is being updated. In spring 2022, the Bicycle Policy Audit (BYPAD) was carried out in the state capital - a certified analysis of strengths and weaknesses to promote cycling in Stuttgart. This completed the first step in updating the cycling concept. Information and results of the BYPAD audit can be found here. A broad-based public consultation on the update is planned for early 2026.

Pedestrian and cycling report

In 2023, the state capital produced a joint walking and cycling report for the first time. It provides a comprehensive overview of the city administration's activities to promote walking and cycling in the 2022/23 financial year and presents key figures as well as numerous projects and construction measures from recent years. The next walking and cycling report is scheduled for fall 2025.

Promotion and support

Well-developed cycle paths, subsidies for bicycle purchases, attractive offers - this makes the bicycle a real alternative. For Stuttgart residents who like to pedal, the city offers various funding opportunities.
