Cycling in Stuttgart

Whether it's a bike ride on the weekend or a trip to work or school - anyone who rides a bike is doing something good for themselves and the environment. Bicycling in Stuttgart is becoming more and more popular. And it is part of the street scene. As a means of transport, sports equipment or as a gem for the health-conscious bicycle lover.

More than 200 kilometers of bike path lead through Stuttgart so far. This means that sightseeing is also possible by bike, for example past the New Palace into the Upper Palace Garden. The ADFC has designated a special route for this purpose.

Stuttgart is to become a bicycle city

In 2019, the municipal council decided in principle that the state capital should also become a cycling city. The aim is to achieve a cycling mode share of 25 percent of traffic. In addition to current projects, such as the main cycle route 2 or the redesign of Bad Cannstatt station square, cycling is to be expanded with many other activities and subsidies.

Proportion of cyclists in Stuttgart on the rise

The proportion of cyclists in Stuttgart has risen steadily over the past few years. This can be measured using the data collected at the cycle counting points. In 2023, 4,766,380 journeys were counted. In the last modal split survey (MID 2017), the proportion of journeys made by bicycle among Stuttgart's resident population was around 8 percent (walking 29%, motorized private transport 40%, public transport 23%).

There are almost 360 kilometers of cycling facilities in Stuttgart. In addition, there are 265 one-way streets open to bicycles in the opposite direction and 128 so-called bicycle locks. Around 70% of the road network in Stuttgart is traffic-calmed with a speed limit of 30 km/h and has a speed that is compatible with mixed traffic with motor vehicles.

On the Radelthon around the Kessel, leisurely along the Neckar and through vineyards or sporty with downhill and pumptracks - those who get on their bikes in their free time will find many routes and offers in Stuttgart.
