Stuttgart wants to be climate-neutral by 2035. But what does this mean in concrete terms for the state capital?

In climate-neutral Stuttgart, energy generation is largely renewable. Most buildings are excellently insulated and equipped with systems for generating renewable energy. Many buildings produce more energy than they consume.

Pedestrian and bicycle traffic dominates the streets, and electromobility has long since replaced the use of combustion engines. Stuttgart’s companies continue to be among the best in the world and operate in a highly energy and resource-efficient manner.

Energy no longer comes from abroad in an expensive way. On the contrary: value is created locally by citizens, companies and local energy suppliers. Not least thanks to intensive research work at the Stuttgart science hub, it has been possible to develop sustainable and optimized technologies for power generation and supply.

Expressed in figures: Stuttgart’s final energy consumption is only half of what it was in 1990 and greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by as much as 95 percent.

Stuttgart still has a long way to go before it becomes a climate-neutral state capital, but initial successes have already been achieved. In order to regularly review progress, Stuttgart prepares an energy balance sheet and a greenhouse gas balance sheet for the entire city area every year. All important sectors are taken into account: Private households, mobility, the economy and also the emissions of the city administration.

The energy and greenhouse gas balance for the entire city of Stuttgart shows that greenhouse gas emissions totaling 3.8 million tons were caused in the city area. This means a saving of 41 percent in 2019 compared to the base year 1990.

To achieve its goals, Stuttgart is implementing numerous measures in various fields of action:

•  Energy management for municipal properties is unique in Germany.
• Step by step and project by project, Stuttgart is driving forward the urban  energy transition.
• A sustainable heat supply is essential for Stuttgart to become climate-neutral. The  heat transition strategy plays a central role in this.
• The greenhouse gas emissions caused by building materials are taken into account in Stuttgart’s municipal resource strategy
• The broad-based  climate action program was adopted by the municipal council at the end of 2019. It contains numerous other measures and summarizes the current interim goals on the path to climate neutrality.
